THE WAR ZONE

by Virgil R. Marco Sr., 366BS Tail Gunner, 305BG

Our crew was together again and we found that we had a new Engineer Gunner by the name of Joe Rhodes.  Ron Yeager had transferred to another crew and was assigned to another bomb group.

After a day or two of processing and orientation, we boarded a train for an all night ride to Stafford, a replacement center north of London.

The next night we witnessed our first air raid of London.  The sound of sirens was frightening at first as it meant that enemy planes with their bombs were in the vicinity of London and our replacement center.  I saw the lights in the black sky searching for the approaching planes.  Then the anti-aircraft guns began sending up a barrage of flak at the attackers with red flashes popping against the black sky.  The Luftwaffe dropped their bombs on London and left.  The lights left the sky and the noise of the "all clear", sirens were heard.  It wouldn't be long now before we would be flying over the enemy's territory dropping bombs and dodging their flak.  I was aware now that we were in a war zone and would be part of it very soon.
