Oscar Julian Boothe

 

Oscar Julian Boothe, most everyone knew him as Julian, was born Jan. 28, 1920 at Spur, Texas and died June 29, 1944 on a bombing mission over Cherbourg, France.  His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Homer A. and Dora (Odeneal) Boothe. He graduated from Spur High School in 1937 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1940.  His training took place at Sheppard Field, Texas, Patterson Field, Ohio, Kelly Field, Texas, Cimarron Field, Oklahoma, Pampa Air Field, Pampa, Texas.  He graduated from Pampa Army Air field on Feb. 16, 1943, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on that date.

He became a B-26 medium bomber pilot with the 323rd Bomb Group, 456 Bomb Squadron in the 9th Air Force in England in May 1943. . He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in March of 1944.  His plane, named Klassie Lassy, was shot down on June 29, 1944 on his 77th Mission over Cherbourg, France.

Military honors were presented him in the form of, Distinguished Flying Cross with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Medal with 18 Oak Leaf Clusters; European Theater Ribbon; American Theater Ribbon; American Defense Medal; Unit Citation with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.  He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star medals.
